The CTA Button Myths

"Make it red!" "No, green converts better!" Let's look at actual data.

What We Analyzed

500 landing pages across SaaS, e-commerce, and tools. We tracked:

  • Button color
  • Button copy
  • Button placement
  • Conversion correlation

  • The Results

    Color: It Barely Matters

    | Color | Avg. Conversion |

    |-------|-----------------|

    | Blue | 3.2% |

    | Green | 3.1% |

    | Orange | 3.4% |

    | Red | 3.0% |

**The insight:** Contrast matters more than color. Make it stand out from your page.

    Copy: This Matters A Lot

    | CTA Copy Type | Avg. Conversion |

    |---------------|-----------------|

    | "Get Started" | 2.8% |

    | "Start Free Trial" | 4.1% |

    | "Get [Outcome] Now" | 4.6% |

**The insight:** Specific > Generic. Tell them exactly what happens.

    Placement: Also Critical

    | Placement | Avg. Conversion |

    |-----------|-----------------|

    | Above fold only | 2.1% |

    | Below fold only | 1.4% |

    | Both (sticky or repeated) | 4.8% |

**The insight:** One CTA isn't enough. Repeat it.

    The Perfect CTA Formula

    1. **Color:** High contrast with your background

    2. **Copy:** "[Verb] + [Specific Outcome]" — "Get Your Report" not "Submit"

    3. **Placement:** Hero + end of each section + sticky header on scroll

    Quick Wins

  • Add "Free" or "No credit card" near your CTA
  • Use first person: "Start my free trial" > "Start your free trial"
  • Add urgency only if real: "Limited beta spots" (don't fake it)
